POWER Africa
CARE’s Promoting Economic Opportunities for Women’s Empowerment in Rural Africa (Power Africa) Project is a $13 million, four-year (2013-2017) project, funded by the MasterCard Foundation which aims to increase financial inclusion in Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia and Rwanda through the Village Savings and Loan Association (savings group) approach, while also creating a platform for sharing lessons learned within and between the four countries.
POWER Africa impacts women, men, girls, and their families. Village saving groups are a platform for growth. Members learn how to start their own businesses, manage their finances, contract loans, and earn sufficient income to repay credit. Added income has profound effects on families: greater stability, changes in gender relationships, and heightened ambition. The best way to understand the differences in the lives of POWER Africa participants, their families, and their communities is to let them speak for themselves.
Here you will find the stories and testimonies of men and women that have been touched by VSLA across Rwanda, Burundi, Côte d'Ivoire and Ethiopia. Explore the challenges and benefits of POWER Africa with the community members and their families.
